Do you fall under DOT testing guidelines?
If you work in transportation, you need to know and understand the requirements for drug and alcohol testing. Not every organization that transports people falls under DOT regulations. Even if someone isn’t driving, they may fall under DOT guidelines depending on the job function.
According to the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) – Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, you will be subject to drug-and-alcohol DOT testing if:
“Your company’s vehicles have gross vehicle weight ratings of 26,001 or more pounds, are designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) or are used to transport hazardous materials requiring placarding under the FMCSA’s Hazardous Materials Regulations.”
Furthermore, certain “safety-sensitive” positions fall under DOT testing:
Performing tasks are defined by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) as safety-sensitive. Working on pipelines, driving a truck, operating a ferry, steering a train and repairing an airplane may be subject to DOT workplace drug & alcohol testing.
The tasks you actually perform qualify you as a safety-sensitive employee — not your job title. Also, some employees, like managers and supervisors, may be qualified for these jobs but are not currently performing them.
Do they have to be tested as well?
In most cases, yes. At a moment’s notice or in an emergency that employee may be asked to perform a safety-sensitive job.
